Bespoke Innovative Software
We approach hiring humans in the right way.
Many business owners think they need a Rockstar Developer. But in most cases, nothing could be further from the truth.
The more entrepreneurs, appreneurs and tech people we talk to, the more complaints we hear about not being able to find the right candidate for development positions and waterfall projects turning into a bombsite with significant financial consequences.
You only need to take a look at UK job boards to see the problem. The same ads for the same job are advertised by the same companies for month after month.
The reason is clear: lots of demand for quality developers, but far too few available to hire. It is an issue of supply outstripping demand. It is hardly surprising that salary costs are skyrocketing for employees with pointless letters after their name on LinkedIn. Passing multiple-choice exams on the 3rd attempt is a mutual waste of time. This type of developer is mostly after another step up the salary ladder with nothing additional to offer.
The problem is not technical efficiency. Finding people who can write good code is not the challenge. Finding people you can work with to deliver a project on time, through good choices with clear communication is far more difficult. It means looking beyond coding ability when hiring. It takes a highly experienced proven developer with enterprise communication skills to build a quality development team worth having. Otherwise you have no idea what’s going on and the delivery cost ends up being tripple what was originally anticipated. Members of each team must add honest value with confidence.
What we look for when hiring a developer...
If you hire a developer without the passion to learn from others… they will never improve, deliver on time or do anything new. We have all encountered the savant developer. The guy who codes in his dreams. But hiring that person does not always lead to great results. There are other factors we consider when hiring:
- Communication skills.
- Time to respond (working remotely).
- Aptitude to share & learn.
- Genuinely care about what is delivered.
- Sense of humour (sarcasm qualifies).
We will invest in developers who go the extra mile within their working hours because they want to. Not turning up as a ‘bum in seat’ to perform the very minimum contractually as possible while clock watching.
We want our teams to be the best at what they do and love coming to work every day. Maintaining the modern flexible start-up attitude with tangible rewards is key for any tech company that wants to keep their employees. If you make the job fit the person and not the other way around - the results speak for themselves. Timezone difference is sometimes a massive benefit.
To be the best, you need to work along-side the best… that is what we look for.
